20 Things I’m Gonna Miss About SIPA

  1. Taking the 10 with Tita Dories every morning
  2. Farzana’s laugh
  3. Hearing Kristine and Ivy’s voices from the office next to mine
  4. Eating lunch with Tita, Manong Henry, Manang Nelda, Claire, and Hannah
  5. My computer that freezes every time I try to open a new tab or copy a big chunk of text
  6. The spiders that lurk in the many boxes in my office
  7. Angel saying “Go home!” instead of “Hello!” when he visits my office in the afternoon
  8. The funny wallpaper in the Ladies Room
  9. The badass copy machine
  10. Hearing Joel talk about visionary stuff
  11. Being around such fun, progressive, and inspiring Pilipin@s
  12. The staff training meetings
  13. The free food during the staff training meetings
  14. The free food during other meetings
  15. The free food overall
  16. Saying “Hi Farzana!” when my supervisor calls me on my office phone
  17. Our CED meetings
  18. Talking to Ivy about community organizing
  19. The feeling of being able to directly contribute to my community
  20. FORGET THIS, I’M GONNA MISS EVERYTHING

An Update

Last Thursday, Ivy and I dropped by the Silver Lake Adult Day Health Care Center to deliver some outreach flyers. Even though I was only there for like five minutes or something, seeing all the senior citizens put a huge smile on my face. It was the director’s birthday and to celebrate, all the senior citizens were dancing on stage, while those who were unable to stand swayed their arms and moved their torsos in their chairs. When I got there, they were dancing to Wonder Girls, and it was so cute, I went “Awwwwww.” I got to meet the director and wish her a happy birthday, and then she told Ivy and me about how half of the senior citizens will be leaving the center soon because of the budget cuts to social services. It made me very sad to hear that, because they have such a large, thriving Filipino community at this center. It won’t be as large, as fun, or as happy once half the senior citizens leave. I asked Ivy where they would be going, and she said that they will either transfer to different centers or just stay at home. I hope everything goes well.

Also, I only have two weeks left of my internship and then it’s back to school, school, school. Stupid Berkeley and their semester system. If Berkeley was on quarter system, I wouldn’t have to go back until late September and I would still have time to drop by SIPA after my internship ends! Man, total bust!
